Do-Gooders (Part 97)
Leash Their Intellects
For the message of The Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written:

'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.'

Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the Law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?... For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
1 Corinthians 1:18-20, 25 (NIV)*
Long ago, I married a genius. He had the quickest mind I'd ever known. He taught himself to read when he was two and blew away every standardized test. When he left after decades of marriage, loss brought a greater gain: I found Jesus. But that's a story for another time.

I think I've got just enough intellect to understand those who have a lot more. So here's my considered conclusion: brilliant minds can lead, confuse or destroy the people God allows to possess them. Because such heady power can gallop in twisted directions--unless it's leashed.

Without submitting to the yoke of Christ, without relinquishing the reins to Him, without a heart's overruling passion, without the faith to walk uncharted paths, without vision unrelated to eyes, then believing the inexplicable becomes a mountain lofty minds can't climb.

Actors, models and talent for Christ: No matter how glorious your grades, you're an idiot compared to God. Accepting this inadequacy is a deflating imperative to receive His glorious wisdom. He will not fill your prideful places. So keep your intellect on a leash. Release it gently when it can help.

But if your resume is humble, if you feel you are unqualified, if leading stars make you feel less than, you're in a great place for promotion. God enjoys giving you His wisdom. Go face down on the floor and ask Him. Because big degrees just weigh you down when you're reaching for the finish line.
